#041 Two Worlds, One Focus (with Steven McRae)
Monday May 25, 2020
Monday May 25, 2020
Words by Stevie Ward: This is my favourite podcast that I have recorded on so many levels. I felt me and Steven connected on quite a lot, despite us being on complete opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of disciplines and physical professions.
We speak about the roles and differences that masculinity has in both of our professions, the stereotype of a Ballet dancer, and Steven’s interesting journey coming from a motorsport background to being a world class dancer.
Steven talks us through winning the Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland and then going straight to London to train at the Royal Ballet. We talk about the lessons learned from the stage and the rugby field and find some unbelievable similarities.
Steven has had a lot of adversity with injuries and we compare anecdotes on that front and talk about his experience of snapping his achilles on stage in front of a full auditorium.
Enjoy the podcast. We hope you get as much from it as we did.

Dan Carcillo has played 9 years in the NHL, playing for the Chicago Blackhawks and La Kings during his career. He played the role of an enforcer on the ice and has had over 100 fights in the game and won 2 Stanley Cups.
Dan, along with other rookies, was physically, sexually and emotionally abused at 17 years old by veterans as a young athlete coming through the ranks, because of ‘hockey culture’ and the unwritten understanding of ‘what goes on in the room stays in the room’. Dan has also had 7 diagnosed concussions…
He had a friend called Steve Montador who passed away from CTE (a disease which is triggered by repeated brain trauma). From seeing this happen and struggling with his own concussion, Dan now has a new purpose in shedding light on treatments he has experimented with and how concussions should be handled better in sport. Psilocybin and which is the active ingredient in magic mushrooms are now in breakthrough stages of research to help treat severe depression and anxiety. Dan is at the front of a new way of thinking - that psilocybin and medicinal mushrooms can help heal concussion and improve brain health.
